Overview

Alternative and renewable resources provide the opportunity for eco-friendly energy recovery. These include, above all, solar, wind and water energy and biomass. By using renewable and alternative resources, traditional non-renewable energy resources, such as coal, gas, and oil, are spared. These can then serve as a source of material for chemical industry. Graduates of the study sub-programme "Alternative Energy Resources and the Environment" are professionals in field of chemical and energy processing and use of both traditional (coal, natural gas, oil) and renewable energy resources and the use of alternative fuels in transportation. They are able to use their knowledge with respect to environmental protection and principles of sustainable development. Due to planned increases in production and consumption of alternative energy resources and biofuels in transportation, the demand for professionals in this field will undoubtedly rise.

The sub-programme uniquely (in the Czech education) combines modern chemical disciplines with biological. The study is based on lectures, seminars and laboratory exercises in the basic chemical disciplines (with emphasis on biochemistry), biology and microbiology. Specialization of students is then profiled by subjects such as biotechnology, clinical biochemistry, molecular genetics, bioanalytical methods, physiology of industrial microorganisms, basic bioinformatics. Bioinformatics is in general terms the computer biology. However, rather than classical biology, it is a biology at the level of individual molecules. The sub-programme therefore provides education in the basic disciplines of the bioinformatics application framework – the education in the field of chemical and molecular-biological disciplines combined with a balanced set of professional knowledge and skills in the field of statistics and data analysis. Study is based on solid foundations, which students build the two-semester study of general, inorganic and organic chemistry in the initial part of the study, supplemented by a further two semester courses in mathematics and physics. On this basis follow emerging chemical disciplines - physical chemistry, analytical chemistry, biochemistry and chemical engineering. Teaching all these disciplines also includes the mandatory completion of basic laboratory courses, which students can further establish optional at the end of the study the laboratory courses. Chemically oriented education is supplemented and developed disciplines focused on information technology, extended language, social and economically oriented disciplines.

They can also get knowledge of surface modifications and anticorrosion protection of materials. Graduates will understand the role, relationships and reactions not only of food components but, in general, processes occurring in natural matrices. The obtained knowledge is applicable for assessments of foods nutritional quality, safety and/or authenticity as well as for evaluation of biological activity of natural compounds and their importance for human health. The emphasize is placed on interactive training of laboratory skills specifically in application of chemical/ instrumental and sensorial analysis of food and natural products. Interdisciplinary character of the programme supports employability of the graduates in all areas related to environmental protection and engineering. The programme provides students with comprehensive knowledge of environmental protection and engineering. The study involves areas of atmosphere, water and soil protection. The programme particularly focuses to education of experts specialized in waste production both in industrial and municipal areas. The programme also concentrates on prevention and minimization of waste production, on waste utilization and reprocessing, waste removal and assessment of environmental impacts. Important part of the programme is devoted to water technologies and air protection technologies. The programme also involves education oriented towards industrial toxicology, ecotoxicology, environmental analysis, decontamination technologies and environmentally oriented legislation.
