Overview

The PhD program in Analytical Chemistry is focused on the determination of the chemical compositions, molecular structures, and molecular conformations as well as on the development of the corresponding experimental and computational techniques. The developed techniques and methodologies are applied for chemical analyses of macro and micro-objects of diverse origins, including objects of living nature, cells and sub-cellular structures, advanced technological materials, and objects of cultural heritage from archaeology and anthropology. For research and development, modern analytical methods like molecular and atomic spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, separation methods as well as advanced sensor techniques are used.

This PhD program study deals with the education and development of highly qualified persons interested in many branches of chemical engineering. Students solve practical or theoretical problems in well-equipped laboratories and/or on powerful computers. Currently we offer PhD projects in the following topics: functional micro and nanoparticles, chemical robotics, engineering of polymer and porous materials, energy storage, microfluidics, microreactors, microsensors and microfabrication, electrokinetics and electrochemical processes, process control and design, development of column unit operations, fundamentals of mass transfer, flotation and surface phenomena, nonlinear dynamics of chemical and biological systems, fire dynamics and systems for fire protection, bioreactors with enzymes and cells, fundamentals of heterogeneous catalysis, automotive catalysts.

Chemistry and Technology of Fuels and Environment

Overview

The aim of the PhD study is to provide the graduates with a deep knowledge of classical and modern technologies for processing of different types of fossil fuels and also their usage in power and energetic engineering respecting environmental protection. Environmentally friendly methods of energy utilization of biomass and the use of alternative fuels in transport and energy is another important area of the PhD students training. The classical technologies of oil, coal and natural gas treatment and processing are discussed together with modern methods of their chemical use. Environmental aspects of different fuels processing and fuel products utilization are studied. Students are encouraged to work independently in the laboratory, to study the scientific and professional literature and to present their results. Student participation in national and international conferences is required and supported by the Faculty.

Overview

The field of study is targeted on kinetics and mechanism of high-temperature processes, phase equilibria, colloidal-chemical phenomena in heterogeneous systems, interaction of materials with environment, modelling of materials structure and engineering study of processes during fabrication of glass, ceramics, glass-ceramics and inorganic binders inclusive their mathematical modelling. From the point of view of possible applications, the dissertation theses are oriented e.g. toward materials for photonics and electronics, biomaterials for hard tissue implants, materials for space research, composite materials for building industry or high-temperature applications, nano- and submicro- layers improving the functional properties of materials (e.g. optical, bactericidal, mechanical or chemical). During the study and own research work, the students obtain thorough knowledge about the preparation of inorganic non-metallic materials and their functional properties. They will meet the advanced analytical and characterization experimental methods for study of dependence among materials composition, structure and properties of materials as well as the mathematical methods and models for describing the technological processes and properties of inorganic non-metallic materials.

Overview

The aim of the Ph.D. study program is to train experts with deep knowledge of environmental and related chemical and biochemical disciplines, informatics and mathematical modeling. Ph.D. studies build on this foundation and deepen knowledge in wide scale of environmental areas such as: analytical methods for monitoring the of water and air quality and soil contamination; technologies for drinking water production, wastewater treatment; sludge treatment, solid waste management and soil decontamination technologies; removal of air pollutants. An important part of the study is also the prevention of all forms of waste, recycling and recovery as renewable resources. Students are trained in solution of complex research projects.

Overview

The goal of study is to educate specialists with a deep knowledge in the field of food chemistry, food / feed analysis and human nutrition - reflecting the current state of the art in respective scientific field and with the vision of future developments / challenges. The students will get not only an extensive theoretical knowledge but also broad practical experience in laboratories equipped with the modern instrumentation. The courses provided to future specialist are focused on reaction occurring in food during processing transportation and /or storage. The major parameters of foodstuffs such as nutritional value, sensory properties and safety are under focus, food supplements are also issue of concern. Special attention is paid to advanced analytical strategies applicable for efficient control of chemical contaminants / residues / toxicants, attention is also paid to modern omics strategies enabling fighting food fraud and studies of biologically active food components. As regards human nutrition, some courses are concerned also with medical aspect associated with this area.

Overview

The field of study of Inorganic chemistry is focused on the synthesis of advanced inorganic compounds and materials and studying the relationship between their chemical composition, structure and physico-chemical properties using a variety of instrumental characterization methods and theoretical tools. Based on this knowledge it is possible to design synthesis routes targeted on special inorganic materials and coordination compounds with predefined physical, electrochemical, catalytic and biochemical properties. With a focus on structural chemistry, material research and biocoordination chemistry this field of study has an interdisciplinary character ranging from physics and physical chemistry to biochemistry. The acquired knowledge and skills can vary according to the particular thesis topic from preparative and analytical chemistry to quantum chemistry and other theoretical approaches used for the description of molecular or crystalline structure.

Overview

Programme is focused on the deepening theoretical and practical knowledge of the processes used in advanced inorganic technologies. During working on research projects students gain experience with operating as a part of team. At the same time they practice skills such as planning and administration associated with project management. During the study, the students grow in the context of the selected objects and the focus of doctoral thesis in following branches: technical electrochemistry, photocatalysis, catalytic and membrane processes or heterogeneous non-catalyzed reactions. Integral parts of the doctoral study are pedagogical activities including teaching and guiding younger students.

Overview

Material Engineering is focused on a very complex area of research, development, preparation, processing, characterization and use of materials for various applications. This includes both the theoretical bases of material processes, particularly physics and chemistry of heterogeneous systems, kinetics of solid-state reactions and transport phenomena and the area of evaluation of functional properties of various kinds of materials for specific applications. As for the materials applications, dissertation theses are focused primarily on materials for electronics, photonics and materials for bio-applications. Considerable attention is also paid to nanostructured materials, their preparation, properties, analyses and evaluation of toxic effects. During the study and own research work, the students obtain thorough knowledge about the preparation and properties of various kind of materials. They will meet the advanced analytical and characterization methods for study of dependence among materials composition, structure and properties of materials (including of biocompatibility), as well as the mathematical methods and models for describing the technological processes and properties of materials.

Overview

The field of study is focused on various kinds of advanced metallic materials like high-strength and thermally resistant light-weight alloys and intermetallics for highly demanding applications, metallic biomaterials for permanent and temporary medical implants, nano-crystalline alloys, highly corrosion resistant materials for power and building industry, historical materials for objects of cultural heritage etc. In addition, processes of metal recovery from wastes and advanced surface treatment processes of metallic materials improving corrosion resistance, mechanical performance and biocompatibility are studied. During the study and experimental works students obtain fundamental knowledge on the relationships between preparation of materials, their internal structure, mechanical and chemical properties. Kinetics and mechanisms of corrosion reactions, phase transformations, mechanical strengthtening processes, physical phenomena of metallic materials and chemical reactions during waste processing are studied. Students meet advanced experimental methods for preparation of novel materials and surface layers, as well as for complex characterization of their internal structure, mechanical and physical properties, corrosion behavior.

Overview

Organic Technology sub-programme builds on Master sub-programmes Engineering and Technology and Applied Chemistry. The aim of the doctoral study is to prepare graduates for mangement and optimization of processes in chemical industry as well as for research and development of chemical specialties. Therefore, this sub-programme is principally oriented at modernization of current technologies of organic substances as well as development of new ones, from basic intermediates and products that are produced in large scale to small tonnage fine chemicals, e.g. biologically active substances, fragrance and flavour substances, surfactants. Chemical transformation occurs in majority of cases in catalytic reactors and therefore requires detailled study of preparation, properties and behaviour of various homogenous and heterogenous catalysts. Students will gain theoretical nad practical knowledge and experience with modern separation, optical and thermal instrumental methods, with computer simulations of reaction and separation processes, with processing of results of laboratory experiments and idustrial data. The area of environmental chemistry is emphasised too, the main focus being chemical, photochemical and photocatalytic removal of undesirable organic substances from the environment. The sub-programme offers wide variety of dissertation theses– from significantly experimentally oriented to those focused on mathematical modelling, computer simulation and statistical evaluation of data, but more often featuring a combination of these.

Overview

This field of the study is focused on the scientific and independent progressive creative work in the broad field of advanced physical chemistry including both theoretical and experimental studies. The topics comprise advanced theoretical and experimental chemical thermodynamics (both chemical and phase equilibria), various computer simulations mainly of biologically relevant systems, theory of fluids, theoretical photodynamics and photochemistry, experimental plasmonics and near-field/surface enhanced spectroscopies, study of membrane properties and development of their use for separation processes and physicochemical description of multicomponent fluid-phase systems. The graduates from this field of study will gain deep general knowledge of physical and computational chemistry; experimental and interpretative skills in the specialized fields like thermodynamics; photochemistry and photophysics; surface and interface chemistry; membrane separation science; vibrational spectroscopy; plasmonics and optical nanoimaging; molecular electrochemistry and molecular beam reactions. These special skills are determined by the topic of the thesis; and may range from the theoretical computational chemistry to experimental studies related either to unique instrument development or to precise and reliable data acquisition of physicochemical characteristics of matter.

Overview

The field of study is focused to research in information and control engineering, data acquisition technologies, measuring systems, computational intelligence and statistical signal and image processing. The interdisciplinary research in these areas allows to integrate separate disciplines and to use similar mathematical background in different applications. Topics studied include chemical sensors, measuring techniques, analysis of multichannel and multidimensional data, image analysis, data modelling, artificial intelligence and robotics. Applications are related but not limited to sensor systems, biomedical data processing, biotechnology and control of engineering systems.
