Summary

The course is focused on the efficiency and ecological aspects of the production of heat and fuels for transportation by reflecting remarkable progress in the field of sustainable and renewable energy methods and technologies.

Syllabus

1. World energy resources & use, fossil fuels & climate change, greenhouse effect
2. Alternative heat energy sources, assessment of energy technologies, carbon footprint,
3. Political support, feed-in tariffs, cost & economy, environmental impact assessment
4. Wood and energy crops, biomass origin, potential, forms, energy content, chemical analysis
5. Solid and compressed fuels, pellets production&specifications, direct combustion, boilers
6. Thermochemical transformation, generator gas, pyrolysis oil, synthetic biomethane&biohydrogen
7. Fuel for transportation, vegetable oil to biodiesel, fermentation to bioethanol,
8. Anaerobic digestion, biogas, energy from algae, exergy efficiency
9. Secondary heat sources, waste to energy, ternary diagram of waste, waste incinerators
10. Solar energy & potential, solar time& azimuth, direct&diffusion light, solar buildings
11. Heat from solar collectors, efficiency, heat recuperation, solar heating &cooling
12. Solar systems for hot water and heating, heat balance, economy&return
13. Geothermal heat sources, hydrotermal systems , heat pumps efficiency &use
14. Heat energy store, phase change materials, chemical accumulation, underground stores
