Virtual tour of the UCT Prague

History

UCT Prague was founded in 1952 but its origins date back to 1807 when the first course in chemistry was delivered at Prague Polytechnic. Reorganization of the polytechnic in 1920 resulted in the transformation of the chemistry department into the School of Chemical Technology, one of the seven sections of the Czech Technical University.

A number of key figures of the history of chemistry relate to UCT Prague. Among them, three figures are renowned in their fields: Vladimir Prelog, Nobel Prize winner, Otto Wichterle, inventor of contact lenses, and Emil Votoček, author of the Czech chemical nomenclature.

Several presidents of the Czech Academy of Sciences – František Šorm, Rudolf Zahradník, and Jiří Drahoš – are connected with the school as well.

UCT Prague was the first Czech university authorised to provide the Eurobachelor degree. As its name indicates, this prestigious recognition certifies the quality of UCT Prague bachelor studies at the European level.

UCT Prague - A challenge that pays off

NonEU Citizens – Long-term Visa or Residence Permit Applying

NonEU citizens must apply for a long-term visa or a long-term residence card for the purpose of studying in the Czech Republic.

An appointment at the respective embassy must be scheduled in order to apply for a long-term visa or residence permit. The appointment can be either scheduled by the applicant himself/herself OR applicants from certain listed countries can apply for an appointment at the Czech Embassy through a governmental project for visa facilitation called Režim Student.

Note that it is more than recommended to arrange a visa appointment at the respective embassy in May at the very latest. The academic year starts in September, and visa approval takes 60–120 days

Especially applicants from India, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Ghana, Sri Lanka, Bhútán, Chad, Cameroon, Maledives, and Nepal, should apply for the visa AS SOON AS POSSIBLE once they receive a Letter of Acceptance because of the competition at the embassies in Abuja (Nigeria), Accra (Ghana) and New Delhi (India) which is enormous, and the appointment slots are very limited!

We encourage all applicants to visit the website of the respective Czech embassy for their country and learn in advance what documents are required when applying for a visa.

Recognition of Previous Foreign Education

Applicants who have been accepted to the studies at the University of Chemistry and Technology must provide a Certificate of Recognition of Previous Foreign Education.

The Recognition of Previous Foreign Education is a process of verifying that the education level which you have completed abroad is equal to the education level required for studying at a university in the Czech Republic.

Providing a Certificate of Recognition of Previous Foreign Education is an indispensable requirement for enrollment in the studies at UCT Prague.

Please visit the website Recognition of Foreign Education to learn how to obtain the Certificate.

General Study Principles

The fundamental prerequisite for successful completion of the study is regular and active participation in lectures and practical classes

The Dean may decide on special rules for participation in the practical classes and the Physical Education subject in case of students with an extraordinary study plan (hereinafter referred to as "ESP").

Study obligations

Read here about how it works with exams, credits, and grading at UCT

  • Fulfilment of study obligations is bound to the continuity of study obligations. The requirements for continuity conditions are determined by the study program guarantor and the course guarantor and can be found in the Study Information System.

STUDY PLAN

  • Subjects are divided into Compulsory, Compulsory-elective, and Elective subjects.
  • A student must successfully pass all compulsory subjects. A student has to choose a minimum of compulsory-elective subjects from the prescribed amount of compulsory-elective subjects. A student may take elective subjects per their interest.
  • A student can retake the same subject a maximum of three times. In the case of a re-registered subject, the student has the same conditions for fulfilling it as during the previous registration.
  • The semester ends with fulfilling all subjects prescribed by the study plan and obtaining the number of credits corresponding to at least thirty times the number of already completed semesters no later than the end of the examination period of the given semester.

EXAMS

  • Students register/unregister for the exams via the Study Information System (SIS).
  • If a student has failed to unregister from the examination for serious reasons, they may excuse their absence in advance (!) directly to the examiner.
  • Unexcused absence or unrecognized excuse for absence from the exam is assessed by the classification "F".
  • A student has the right to two re-sits should they fail the first term of the exam. However, they must respect the terms announced by the department conducting the subject.
  • The right to re-sit an exam expires if the student has not used the opportunity to take the exam within the regular examination period.

ENROLLMENT IN THE NEXT SEMESTER

  • To register for the next semester of the study program, the student must obtain at least 15 credits from compulsory and compulsory-elective subjects in the previous semester.
  • To enroll in the next year of the study program, a student may lack a maximum of 15 credits out of the number of credits corresponding to thirty times the number of semesters already completed.

CLASSIFICATION

  • Test classification:
  1. "A" (1,0 / excellent),
  2. "B" (1,5 / very good),
  3. "C" (2,0 / good),
  4. "D" (2,5 / satisfactory),
  5. "E" (3,0 / sufficient),
  6. "F" (4,0 / insufficient).
  • The examination classification is published in the SIS by the examining teacher.

MESD: from February 3 until February 11, 2024.

Upon your arrival, please visit the reception of the assigned dormitory, identify yourself with your passport, and the receptionist will provide you with documents, a room key, and bed linen. The documents must be signed and handed over to a dormitory officer (in the Student Accommodation office). Should you arrive on a weekend, you will be given the documents, and you must visit the Student Accommodation office on Monday morning.

Kindly note that upon your arrival, you shall also pay an administrative fee of 400 CZK and also a refundable deposit in the amount of 5000 CZK. The fee may be paid in cash in Czech currency, or by card (Visa or Mastercard).

Please, find detailed information about the accommodation in dormitories here.

Registration at the Foreign Police

Those of you who will be accommodated in the dormitories right after your arrival, do NOT have to do the Registration at the Foreign Police, the dormitories will do the registration automatically for you.

Those staying elsewhere, except for a hotel (hotels do the registration automatically too), MUST visit the Foreign Police Office.

If staying in private accommodation, Non-EU nationals must register themselves at the Foreign Police within 3 working days after their arrival. EU nationals within 30 days. Not fulfilling this lawful requirement can lead to a fine of 3000 CZK (120 EUR)!

See the document Foreign Police Registration at the bottom of this page.

It is important to mention that the official language is Czech; the officers at the Foreign Police Office and at the Ministry of Interior are NOT obliged to speak English. Please bear that in mind and bring a Czech-speaking buddy with you!

You can register for a buddy on the website of UCT ESN.

IMPORTANT!

You also must visit the Foreign Police (EU nationals) / Ministry of Interior (Non-EU nationals) to report a change if you change the address during your stay!

CULTURE COURSE – Thursday, September 14, BIII | Thursday, February 8 at 11:00, B23

Join the Culture Course led by Caleb Daniel House, MSc. (USA).

Caleb House was born and raised in Northern California.  Since 2003 he has lived in 10 countries across Europe, Asia, and Africa as a student, volunteer, teacher, researcher, and project manager.  Along the way, he slowly realized that the deep differences in culture are not the main problem, rather the way we think about culture can have a make-or-break impact on the experience abroad. Through a long process of failures and successes, he developed a set of tools to overcome the challenges and to make the most of living in a foreign country.  Since 2018 he has worked in the International Relations Office of the Czech Technical University in Prague.

The Culture Course provides insight into culture shock, culture fatigue, how to think about culture when you're a foreigner, or how to make the most of your time in a foreign country despite challenges.
