Thea Baum came to the UCT Prague to study Science and Biotechnology Master program. She graduated in 2015 and then she started looking for a job, which, she says, was relatively easy after pursuing her degree at the UCT Prague.

In PharmInvent. I work as a Scientific and Regulatory Specialist in Pharmaceuticals Regulatory Affairs sector.

The University of Chemistry and Technology, Prague: Past and Present

UCT Prague is a public higher education university pursuing scientific, research, development, and implementation activities. It is a member of the family of 28 public and state universities in the Czech Republic and is a member of EUA (the European University Association), FEANI (the European Federation of National Engineering Associations) and IGIP (International Society for Engineering Pedagogy). UCT Prague is known for the depth and breadth of its educational and research activities in almost all branches of chemistry, chemical engineering, food chemistry and technology, biochemistry, refining, water treatment, power and biological sciences and technologies, as well as environment protection, materials sciences, and other chemistry-based fields of study.

UCT Prague was founded in 1952 but its origins date back to 1807 when the first course in chemistry was delivered at Prague Polytechnic. Reorganization of the polytechnic in 1920 resulted in the transformation of the chemistry department into the School of Chemical Technology, one of the seven sections of the Czech Technical University.

UCT Prague has produced a number of outstanding alumni, including Professor Otto Wichterle, inventor of soft contact lenses in the 1950s, and Vladimír Prelog, a professor at ETH Zürich who won the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1975, graduated from the School of Chemical Technology in 1928. Prelog received his doctorate there  several years later. 

Notable Research

UCT Prague researchers were very successful within the European Community framework programme, HORIZON 2020, and are actively involved in developing many new research projects and collaborations.

Faculties 

UCT Prague (in addition to departments accomodating the needs of the entire university) has four faculties:

UCT Prague in Numbers

UCT Prague has 871 staff members (2014 Annual Report data), including 510 academic staff and 361 research staff. UCT Prague is accredited to provide three-year Bachelor (BSc) programmes, two-year Master (MSc/Ing.) programmes, and PhD programmes. Total enrollment at UCT Prague in 2014: 3,606 Bachelor and Master students and 843 PhD students (2014 Annual Report data).

Worldwide Cooperation and Collaboration

UCT Prague cooperates with more than 100 universities and institutions worldwide. The university is the most active Czech university participant in the Erasmus+ student exchange programme and has also participated in other programmes such as the 5th and 6th framework programme, COST, EUREKA, and Leonardo da Vinci.

Computing Facilities

UCT Prague maintains high standard computing facilities with a gigabit network. Computers are available to students, researchers, and professors in almost all of the several hundred laboratories and workrooms.

Library: ChemTK

UCT Prague operates the superbly equipped library, ChemTK, situated in the modern National Library of Technology (NTK) building. The ChemTK collection includes more than 100,000 books, handbooks, encyclopaedias, periodicals, and other publications. ChemTK subscribes to 300 professional periodicals and provides electronic access to scientific journals. Over 2,500 journals from prestigious scientific publishing houses are currently available in electronic format. ChemTK also provides access to SciFinder, the Chemical Abstracts Service, and other specialised resources (see full list of eResources) that enable research across scientific specialities.

The complete collections of Beilstein's Handbuch der organischen Chemie and Gmelin's Handbuch der anorganischen Chemie are also available in both print and electronic formats. Print editions are available in NTK's Rare Books and Special Collections reading room.

Central Laboratories

UCT Prague's Central Laboratories consist of eight laboratories:

  • Laboratory of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Spectroscopy
  • Laboratory of Infra-Red (IR) and Raman Spectroscopy
  • Laboratory of Mass Spectrometry (MS)
  • Laboratory of Organic Elemental Analysis
  • Laboratory of X-Ray Diffraction
  • Laboratory of Thermal-Gravimetric Analysis (TGA)
  • Laboratory of Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS) and Laboratory of Surface Analysis

The laboratories provide high-quality equipment for use by students, professors, and research staff members and are equipped with modern instrumentation. Laboratory personnel are experienced in routine as well as specialized experiments.  The laboratories are used for student projects, grant-funded research, and industrial applications. External customers (universities, private companies, and others) can also use the facilities.

Laboratory personnel also teach several courses, workshops, and other seminars for members of the UCT Prague community. The courses include practical techniques as well as methods for spectra interpretation.

PhD Programmes

UCT Prague has over 800 doctoral students, conducting esstential research work in all of its four faculties.

Doctoral students work closely with their advisors largely as scientific assistants, assisting research projects which concurrently teaching and completing any required coursework as well as writing and defending a dissertation about their research project.

Doctoral study programmes at the UCT Prague are carried out in a full-time form or a combination of full-time and distance learning, always on the basis of an individually scheduled study plan and checking study duties. The standard lenght of a doctoral study programme is four years according to current accreditation of the study program.

The University accepts PhD students on a rolling basis throughout the calendar year; it is essential when making your application for doctoral studies that you find an advisor who will guide you through the entire period of your PhD studies.

Faculty of Food and Biochemical Technology (FFBT)

In the Heart of Central Europe

The Czech Republic (in Czech: Česká republika), a landlocked country in Central Europe, has been a member of the European Union since May 1, 2004. The country borders with Poland to the north, Germany to the northwest and west, Austria to the south, and Slovakia to the east.

The historic city of Prague (in Czech: Praha), a major tourist attraction, is its capital and largest city with a metropolitan area population of over two million (just over one million within the city proper).

Other major cities include Brno, Ostrava, Zlín, Plzeň, Pardubice, Hradec Králové, České Budějovice, Liberec, Olomouc, and Ústí nad Labem.

History

Early History

Archaeologists have found evidence of prehistoric human settlement in the area dating back to the Neolithic era. Migrations to the area in the classical era included the Celtic Boii (third century BC) and the Germanic Marcomanni and Quadi tribes (first century). During the Migration Period (ca. fifth century), many Germanic tribes moved westward and southward out of Central Europe. In an equally-significant migration, Slavic people from the Black Sea and Carpathian regions settled in the area (a movement that was also stimulated by the onslaught of peoples from Siberia and Eastern Europe: Huns, Avars, Bulgars, and Magyars). Following in the Germans' wake, they moved southward into Bohemia, Moravia, and parts of present day Austria.

During the seventh century, the Frankish merchant Samo, supporting the Slavs fighting their Avar rulers, became the monarch of the first known Slav state in Central Europe. The Moravian principality arose in the eighth century.

Middle Ages to the Twentieth Century

The Bohemian or Czech state emerged in the late ninth century when it was unified by the Přemyslids. The kingdom of Bohemia was a significant local power during the Middle Ages. It was part of the Holy Roman Empire during the entire existence of this confederation.

Religious conflicts such as the fifteenth century Hussite Wars and the seventeenth century Thirty Years' War had a devastating effect on the local population. From the sixteenth century onwards, Bohemia came increasingly under Habsburg control, since the Habsburgs became first the elected and then hereditary rulers of Bohemia. After the fall of the Holy Roman Empire, Bohemia became part of Austria-Hungary.

Twentieth Century and Beyond

Following the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian empire after World War I, the independent republic of Czechoslovakia was created in 1918. This new country incorporated regions with majority German, Hungarian, Polish and Ruthenian speaking populations. Although Czechoslovakia was a centralist state, it provided what was at the time rather extensive rights to its minorities. However, it did not grant its minorities any territorial political autonomy, which resulted in discontent and strong support among some of the minorities to break away from Czechoslovakia. Adolf Hitler used the opportunity and, supported by Konrad Henlein's Sudeten German Party, gained the majority German speaking Sudetenland through the Munich Agreement. Poland occupied areas with Polish minority around Český Těšín, while Slovakia gained greater autonomy, with the state being renamed to Czecho-Slovakia. Eventually Slovakia broke away further in March 1939, allied to Hitler´s coalition; the remaining Czech territory was occupied by Hitler, who installed the so-called Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, which was proclaimed part of the Reich and where the Protectorate President and Prime Minister were subordinate to the Nazi Reichsprotektor (imperial protector). Approximately 390,000 citizens, including 83,000 Jews, were killed, executed or killed in the war, and hundreds of thousands of others were sent to prisons, concentration camps, or forced into labour. The Czechoslovak government-in-exile and its army fighting against Nazis were acknowledged by the Allies (i.e. Czech troops in Great Britain, North Africa, Middle East and Soviet Union).

In 1945-6, almost the entire German minority of pre-War Czechoslovakia, approximately three million people, were expelled to Germany and Austria. During this time, hundreds of thousands of Germans were held in prisons, detention camps, and used in forced labour. In the summer of 1945, there were several massacres with at least 20,000 deaths. Only 250,000 Germans who had been active in the resistance against the Nazis or who had been deemed essential to the economy were allowed to stay, though many of them emigrated later.

Czechoslovakia uneasily tried to play the role of bridge between the West and East; however, the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia came to power in February 1948, bringing the country within the Soviet sphere of influence. In August 1968, an invasion by Warsaw Pact troops ended efforts by the country's leaders to liberalize party rule and create "socialism with a human face" during the Prague Spring.

In November 1989, Czechoslovakia regained its political independence through a peaceful Velvet Revolution. On January 1, 1993, the country peacefully split in two, creating the independent Czech and Slovak Republics.

The Czech Republic joined NATO in 1999 and the European Union on May 1, 2004. Since 1991, the Czech Republic (former Czechoslovakia), has been a member of the Visegrad Group.

Geography of the Czech Republic


The Czech landscape is quite varied; Bohemia to the west consists of a basin, drained by the Elbe (in Czech: Labe) and Vltava rivers, surrounded by mostly low mountains (the Sudeten with the Krkonoše region, home to the highest point in the country, Sněžka, at 1,602 metres [5,256 ft]). Moravia, the eastern part, is also quite hilly and is drained predominantly by the Morava river, but also contains the source of the Oder (in Czech: Odra) River. Water from the landlocked Czech Republic flows to three different seas: the North Sea, Baltic Sea, and the Black Sea.

The local climate is temperate with warm summers and cold, cloudy, humid winters, influenced by a variety of maritime and continental influences.

Ensuring your Transcripts and Degree are Transferable across Europe

The European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) was designed by the European Commission to enable students to pursue part of their studies abroad; it also helps partner universities compare and mutually-accredit their study programmes. 

ECTS is based on a comparison of particular requirements concerning individual subjects and takes into account the time needed by each student to pass an examination in any given subject (i.e. time devoted to lectures, seminars, and self-study). 

ECTS makes it easier for students to choose from study programmes offered by partner schools abroad. Students may use the ECTS system provided that they themselves, their home university and the partner university abroad approve the suggested study programme.

Students who have successfully completed study programmes abroad may continue their studies with no difficulties, because their study period abroad (and their credits) will be assigned to official records at their home universities.

ECTS credit allocation based on the student workload needed in order to achieve expected learning outcomes

ECTS, the European Credit Transfer System, was developed by the European Commission to provide common procedures to guarantee the full transferability of credits for university studies abroad in order that they might count towards a final qualification in the home country. It provides a way of measuring and comparing academic merits and transferring them from one institution to another.

Courses are assigned a number of credits depending on the workload students need in order to achieve the expected learning outcomes.

The workload indicates the time students usually need to complete all learning activities, such as lectures, seminars, projects, practical work, self-study and examinations required to achieve the expected learning outcomes. The estimation of workload and number of credits assigned to each course is regularly checked and can be modified according to findings from the evaluations.

The credit weight is 1/30 of the average student workload during one term. The term usually takes 13 – 15 weeks. At ICT Prague 60 credits represent the workload required for one year’s full-time study, or 30 credits per term. All students are graded A - F scale according to the Local Grade Scheme.

Bachelor and Master's study degrees are realized through hundreds fields of study. Some of them can be combined with other field of study (even as an interfaculty study – a combined field from different faculties).

The List of degree programmes shows all disciplines offered by ICT Prague and demonstrates the way how to fulfill all conditions for study completion and getting the diploma within the ECTS semester workload (30 credits). However, the proposed study schedule is not mandatory, students can change their workload (they can study more or less than 30 credits per semester) or they can choose other alternative courses (if offered).

Erasmus Policy Statement (Overall Strategy)

UCT Prague regards international cooperation as a vital part of its teaching and scientific activities and purposely extends and deepens this cooperation. Due to the active participation of academic staff in international scientific and educational projects and programmes (such as the EU FPs, TEMPUS, COST, COPERNICUS, EEA grants, NATO…), networking and contact making are continually expanding both in the terms of content as well as geographically. The main criterion for a new cooperation partner is the quality—related either to educational activities or to scientific quality and reputation; the assumption of mutual academic collaboration and reciprocity in student and staff mobility is very important. The areas of cooperation are linked more or less to technical chemistry, food chemistry and technology, material sciences, process engineering, chemical technologies and informatics, biotechnology etc. International scientific and educational events ongoing abroad or held at UCT Prague are also used for meeting new potential partners. Information about UCT Prague are disseminated through printed leaflets, brochures and presentations during staff international mobility.


At present, the University of Chemical and Technology Prague maintains nearly 150 Erasmus bilateral agreements with universities across Europe and more than 50 other agreements with partners not only in Europe but also in the USA, Canada, Australia, Japan, India and many other countries. UCT Prague is open to quality cooperation with all geographical areas. Cooperation with the European partners is of course the most frequent due to the easiest accessibility and lower financial cost.


The main objective of the internationalization is to keep UCT Prague at the top position with respect to both educational and scientific quality. Therefore, attention is consistently paid to the international mobility of staff and expanding opportunities to study abroad for UCTP students. The university seeks after all available resources to support long-term (one-two semesteral) study stays for students at all levels and this form of students' international experience will continue to develop. UCT Prague has fully implemented ECTS and Diploma Supplement Label, facilitating the recognition of studies abroad. For students mostly at doctoral level, internships and placements at leading scientific institutions are provided. Short-term stays at summer schools, conferences and workshops are consistently supported for students of MSc And PhD degrees. In addition to the LLP/Erasmus mobility, students participate in other international programmes, such as AAD, CEEPUS, AKTION, ATHENS, etc. The participation of scientific and pedagogical staff in international projects is highly recommended and supported; the presentation of results and making of new contacts are expected. The attempt to increase the number of teaching staff mobility will be permanently supported.


Great care is given to foreign students and visiting teaching staff. UCT Prague provides international students accredited Bachelor's and Master's study programmes taught in English and—for Erasmus students—a number of courses taught in English. The organization of Czech language courses for foreign students is considered an important activity in the internationalization and students' integration at the university.


Based on a long term cooperation with selected partner universities, double degree study programmes at Master and Doctoral levels in particular were established. Implementation of two Masters and two doctoral ERASMUS MUNDUS programmes resulted from multilateral interuniversity cooperation. Our further aim is to involve more Czech students in courses taught in English.


A very welcome and supported form of internationalization at UCT Prague is receiving doctoral students and trainees from third countries. Other successful activities we will continue to develop are short-term intensive training courses for students and teachers from third countries.


UCT Prague actively participates in a number of international projects and seeks for further participation in projects targeted towards teaching and training. The most successful implemented project is ERASMUS MUNDUS. Two Masters’ study programmes (EM3E and IMETE) have been running for two years; students studying under a consortium of European universities spend one semester at UCTP, some of them prepare also their diploma project and thesis here. UCTP has adopted all necessary procedures for issuing the joint diploma. Similarly, a doctoral programme EUDIME was implemented. During their stay at UCTP, PhD Students are actively involved in scientific research teams. The fourth EM project is EURINDIA where UCTP trains one PhD Student from India.


UCT Prague participates regularly in TEMPUS projects; in the past, through individual advisors/evaluators of several projects, currently as a partner. In this project, UCT Prague organizes intensive professional courses for teachers and students from Russian universities involved in the project.


Another form of cooperation is the participation of UCT Prague in ERASMUS thematic projects. The first one is the ISEKI-Food (originally FoodNet), which maps the teaching of food science and technology in Europe and to which UCTP has contributed a number of documents and data. The second example is the participation in the European Chemistry Thematic Network (ECTN and EC2EN2) which resulted in the possibility to grant IVTP graduates title EuroBachelor®.


Participation of UCT Prague in these projects is reflected in curricula modernization, creation of new degree programmes, awarding of double/joint diploma and implementation of new reaching methods and organization of studies. An integral part of the internationalization is an active students' club ESC and its involvement in the European network ECN; ESC plays an important role in the integration of foreign students into the local environment.

Recognition of Education and Qualifications Acquired Abroad (Nostrification)

There are 2 steps to Nostrification of your previous education:

(1)          Verification of documents regarding the level of education

It's important that all the documents are verified in the country which issued them.

The authentication requirements differ according to the international treaties applying to the country where the original document was issued. Countries (states) can be divided into three groups:

  • A - For members of the Hague Convention the legalization proceeds by Apostille – an unified form of authentication of documents issued by the competent administrative body of the state in which the document was issued
  • B - Verification is not required for documents issued in countries which are parties to a relevant international agreement abolishing the requirement of legalization for foreign public documents
  • L - Unless the international agreement sets otherwise, the authenticity of signatures and stamps on the document must be verified by a two bodies:
    • the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the coutry, where institution which issued the document is based
    • respective representative office of the Czech Republic (e.g. Embassy / Consulate) in the country where the institution which issued the document is based

a)         Students applying for Bachelor degree programme

Secondary school leaving certificates issued outside the Czech Republic are subject to formal Recognition of an Education and Qualifications Acquired Abroad. The process of Recognition of secondary education documents is regulated by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport. How to proceed?

b)           Students applying for a Master degree programme or PhD degree programme

The decisions upon the recognition of foreign higher education (Bachelor and Master diplomas) are an exclusive competence of public higher education institutions (universities) offering a similar study programme in terms of content. This competence is not extended to private higher education institutions. 

All applicants are advised to inquire which public higher education institution in the Czech Republic provides a study programme corresponding with their foreign education prior to applying for the recognition.

According to the administrative code, the applicant cannot require the recognition of the same higher education qualification from multiple public higher education institutions simultaneously.

If the request is rejected by a public higher education institution, the applicant can submit it to another higher education institution providing a similar study programme in terms of content only after the rejection has become legally effective (i.e. after 15 days from receipt of the decision).

As for holders of qualifications issued by military higher education institutions, recognition of qualification is determined by the Ministry of Defence; in the area of security services, recognition is determined by the Ministry of Interior (in accordance with Section 95, Subsection 9 of the Higher Education Act).

 

 Nostrification (Recognition) procedure at UCT Prague (relevant for Master and PhD applicants)

To obtain recognition of their foreign education, applicants are required to submit hard copies of the following documents:

  • Legally attested copy of a Diploma
  • Legally attested copy of a Diploma Supplement
  • Certified translations of both documents into Czech language
  • Certified written power of attorney, if submitted by a person other than the graduate
  • Completed and signed Application for the Recognition of Foreign Higher Education in the Czech Republic form
  • Proof of the fee payment

Please note:

Due to the electronic entrance system, every applicant shall be accompanied by an employee of UCT Prague.

If it is found during the recognition proceeding that it is not within the scope of rector’s responsibility to make a decision on the request for recognition of foreign higher education, e.g. because UCT Prague does not provide a similar study programme, the fee of CZK 3,000 is not charged, and, if already paid, will be returned to the applicant.

There is no refund of the fee if the recognition proceeding is discontinued due to a deficient application (absence of documents necessary for assessing the application), and the applicant’s failure to remove the deficiency upon request. 

There is no refund of the fee in case of rejection of the application due to substantial differences between the compared study programmes.

In case the purpose of the recognition is not further study, the equality of the education will be assessed in accordance with the Agreement – if substantial differences between the compared study programmes are found, the rector may reject the application.

Description

The Bachelor study programme in Chemistry and Technology is designed primarily for applicants from abroad; i.e.,  students who pay tuition.  All courses are conducted in English.

Graduates of the programme acquire basic knowledge and skills in mathematics; physics; inorganic, organic, physical, and analytical chemistry; biology; and biochemistry.

Theoretical instruction is supplemented with a wide range of hands-on laboratory opportunities which develop and strengthen each student's practical abilities.

Throughout the programme, core compulsory subjects are complemented with instruction in compulsory-optional and optional study specialization subjects (see Complete Curriculum) provided by the various UCT Prague faculties.

The study programme is accredited by the Czech Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports and is in accordance with requirements of the Bologna Process - European Higher Education Area.

Graduates

The main aims of the study programme are to prepare graduates—all of whom acquire excellent theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and experience in basic natural science disciplines—for continuing their studies at the Master level and/or prepare them for professional positions in the chemical, food and pharmaceutical industries, at research institutions, or in the public sector.

Overview

Bachelor´s study programme Chemistry and Technology aims at completion and extension of basic knowledge and skills in mathematics, physics and chemistry and, at the same time, learning fundamentals of chemical engineering and chemical technologies. Optional courses allow gaining knowledge of chemical specialties, catalytic processes and relationships between chemistry or chemical technologies and the environment. The study sub-programme offers a wide range of laboratory work which strengthens practical skills and properly completes and extends theoretical knowledge. Students are taught common compulsory subjects which are later completed by specialized compulsory-optional and optional courses of individual faculties. Overview

Bachelor´s study programme Chemistry and Technology aims at completion and extension of basic knowledge and skills in mathematics, physics and chemistry. The study sub-programme offers a wide range of laboratory work which strengthens practical skills and properly completes and extends theoretical knowledge. Students are taught common compulsory subjects which are later completed by specialized compulsory-optional and optional courses of individual faculties. At the Faculty of Chemical Technology students may focus their professional profiles towards specialized fields – production and properties of metals, glasses or ceramic materials, materials for electronics, plastics and rubber, materials with exceptional properties, biocompatible materials and nano- or submicron-scale structured materials. They can also get knowledge of surface modifications and anticorrosion protection of materials. The Bachelor´s study programme is accredited by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, and is in accordance with the European education requirements based on the Bologna process.

Overview

Bachelor´s study programme Chemistry and Technology aims at completion and extension of basic knowledge and skills in mathematics, physics and chemistry. The study sub-programme offers a wide range of laboratory work which strengthens practical skills and properly completes and extends theoretical knowledge. Students are taught common compulsory subjects which are later completed by specialized compulsory-optional and optional courses of individual faculties. At the Faculty of Environmental Technology the specialization comprises all fundamental areas of chemistry and environmental chemistry and of all related disciplines as ecology, hydrochemistry, waste water treatment, atmospheric chemistry and environmental microbiology. A principle of sustainable development represents an important part of the study curriculum with a special emphasis on its biological, chemical and technological aspects. The Bachelor´s study programme is accredited by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, and is in accordance with the European education requirements based on the Bologna process.

Bachelor´s study programme Chemistry and Technology aims at completion and extension of basic knowledge and skills in mathematics, physics and chemistry. The study sub-programme offers a wide range of laboratory work which strengthens practical skills and properly completes and extends theoretical knowledge. Students are taught common compulsory subjects which are later completed by specialized compulsory-optional and optional courses of individual faculties. At the Faculty of Food and Biochemical Technology the students may direct their studies primarily to biochemistry, microbiology and biotechnology on one side or predominantly to food chemistry, food analysis, nutrition and food technologies on the other side by proper selection of optional courses. The Bachelor´s study programme is accredited by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, and is in accordance with the European education requirements based on the Bologna process.

The broadly outlined structure of this programme together with intentional connection between chemical, biological and engineering education widens possibilities of graduates' employability. The programme extends and deepens general knowledge gained at the Bachelor level studies both in compulsory courses in biochemistry, organic and physical chemistry, biology, microbiology, food analysis, food safety and process control and biotechnology and bioengineering. The students may concentrate on a particular branch of study by a proper choice of optional courses.

The programme has been designed to continue the education of graduates of Bachelor degree studies oriented towards materials sciences. The general knowledge gained at the Bachelor level is extended and deepened in courses focused mainly on physical chemistry of materials, materials engineering and materials technologies. Students may concentrate on individual groups of material by a proper choice of optional courses. The programme prepares experts with high level knowledge of environmental chemistry, microbiology, hydrobiology, water and atmosphere technologies, decontamination technologies and waste handling technologies. Interdisciplinary character of the programme supports employability of the graduates in all areas related to environmental protection and engineering. The programme provides students with comprehensive knowledge of environmental protection and engineering. The study involves areas of atmosphere, water and soil protection. The programme particularly focuses to education of experts specialized in waste production both in industrial and municipal areas. The programme also concentrates on prevention and minimization of waste production, on waste utilization and reprocessing, waste removal and assessment of environmental impacts. Important part of the programme is devoted to water technologies and air protection technologies. The programme also involves education oriented towards industrial toxicology, ecotoxicology, environmental analysis, decontamination technologies and environmentally oriented legislation.

Due to versatility of their knowledge background they easily adapt to changing conditions and new tasks. The graduates may also find positions in administration and in supervisory agencies.

1. What is a validation examination (nostrification)?

A validation examination, also called nostrification examination, is an examination which can be assigned  to an applicant whose knowledge and skills achieved in a foreign coutry are not clearly equal to education acquired in the Czech Republic. The validation examination shows whether the applicant’s education is equal to education provided in the Czech Republic according to the relevant education programme(s).

Applicants who are not Czech citizens do not take the validation examination in the subject Czech language and literature. The validation examination is usually taken in the Czech language. Anyone who declares they do not understand the language in which the proceedings are held is entitled to a translator/interpreter registered in the list of translators. Applicants arrange the assistance of translator/interpreter at their own expense.

2. Should I prove my English proficiency for studying in UCT Prague English degree programmes in any way?

UCT Prague requires that students have a good command of English to be able to study successfully at our university. Therefore, prospective students are asked to present proof of their English language skills.

Non-Native English Speakers

The minimum requirement is level B1, preferably B2, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Recognised certificates:

  • Cambridge ESOL: minimum PET/FCE
  • TOEFL iBT: minimum score 80
  • IELTS: minimum band score 5.0

Other acceptable formats (if the student does not have any internationally-recognised certificate):

  • Certificate issued by a language center at the sending institution (it will be accepted only if it confirms the minimum language skills level B1-B2)
  • Certificate issued by a language school (it will be accepted only if it confirms the minimum language skills level B1-B2)
  • > Confirmation of language knowledge issued by a language center or a language school in case the student does not have any of the official documents mentioned above

Native English Speakers

Students whose mother tongue is English or who study a study programme in English at their home university are exempted from this obligation.        

3. I would like to apply for the Bachelor degree programme starting in the Winter (Fall) semester. I will receive my final high/secondary school diploma in May or July, so I am not able to meet the application deadline of 31 March for internationals students. Do you take into consideration this fact?

Yes, we do. You can apply for the Bachelor degree by providing the Transcript of Records without the last semester of your high school study and by providing a provisional certificate of graduation in May or July issued by your school. This way you will meet the application deadline of March 31.

Applications for Bc / MSc studies are accepted from 11 January (please do not send them earlier) until 31 March. Applications received after the deadline will be disregarded.

Application Materials

The required application documents include :

  1. Application form for Bachelor / Master or Doctoral students
  2. Diploma with Diploma supplement (Master degree applicants) or Graduation certificate with Transcript of records (Bachelor degree applicants), i.e. the list of all subjects studied in last 4 years at secondary school, including the number of hours for individual subjects. Example of a suitable Transcript is available here >
  3. Recognition (Nostrification) certificate of your previous education must be submitted by the date of Enrollment at the latest
  4. Letter of motivation
  5. Certificate of English language knowledge
  6. Signed Curriculum Vitae
  7. Copy of your passport
  8. Certified translation of Birth certificate or similar document providing evidence of date and place of birth (NOT an ID or passport).
  9. Recent Health certificate >(not older than 2 months) confirmed by an official health institution
  10. List of publications and other outcomes of scientific work (relevant for PhD applicants only)

All application documents must be originals or oficially certified / notarized copies, verified along with international agreements.  They must be accompanied with a translation into English or Czech (also certified/notarized), if in any other language. Simple copies are not considere afficial documents and will not be accepted.

Make sure you sumbit you application for Nostrification timely as the processing time can reach up to 60 days.

Applicants for Master / Doctoral Degree Programme

Applicants are supposed to have acquired Bachelor / Master degree in a related field of study. The level of their university degree must be equivalent to the level of a Czech university Bachelor / Master degree. Whether the education acquired outside the Czech Republic is equivalent will be determined by the means of Nostrification, which can be executed by  a public university that runs a study programme similar in terms and content, i.e. the University of Chemistry and Technology Prague. Conditions and Proceedings for the Admission of Foreign Students to Study Foreign-Language Degree Programs at the University of Chemistry and Technology Prague UCT Prague

Introductory Provisions

The admission of foreign students to study foreign-language degree programs at UCT Prague and its faculties is governed by Act No. 111/1998 Coll., on universities and the amendment of related laws (hereinafter the “Universities Act”), and the internal regulations of UCT Prague with the exception of the regulations contained herein.

Admission

(1)       UCT Prague and its faculties shall admit foreign applicants to its foreign-language bachelor and master’s degree programs, providing that applicants have completed secondary or secondary professional education equivalent to the level of Czech secondary education, and providing that they satisfy the other eligibility requirements. UCT Prague and its faculties shall admit foreign applicants to its foreign-language master’s degree programs, providing that applicants have achieved a bachelor degree in a related degree program at a university equivalent to the level of Czech universities, and providing that they satisfy the other eligibility requirements.

(2)      UCT Prague and its faculties shall admit foreign applicants to its foreign-language doctorate degree programs, providing that applicants have achieved a master’s degree in a master’s degree program or graduated from a university equivalent to the level of Czech universities (M.Sc., M.A.) in the same or a related branch of knowledge, and providing that they satisfy the other eligibility requirements.

(3)       Within the terms of admission, UCT Prague shall verify all eligibility requirements, including those relating to relevant qualifications, specific knowledge and abilities, secondary education and fitness to study at UCT Prague.

(4)       The Dean may exempt the student from admission requirements, or part thereof, based on the results of the applicant and the level of the graduation school.

Admission Proceedings

(1)       Admission proceedings commence upon receipt, by UCT Prague or one of its faculties providing the respective foreign-language degree program, of a written study application (as a rule, no later than April 30) at the following address:

(2)       Foreign applicants do not pay fees for admission proceedings.

 

Enrolment

(1)       In order to enrol, foreign applicants shall submit documentary evidence of the following:

a) long-term or permanent residence in the Czech Republic

b) health and accident insurance valid in the Czech Republic for the respective academic year

c) requisite state of health necessary to study at UCT Prague.

(2)       The documents stated in Par. 1 shall be either originals or legally certified copies.

(3)       Foreign students shall conclude a study agreement with UCT Prague concerning the respective foreign-language degree program within 3 calendar days of enrolment.

 

Fees for Foreign-Language Degree Programs

(1)       All students of foreign-language degree programs shall pay the fees for their respective program.

(2)       The level of the fees is derived from the average cost, per student, of providing the respective degree program at UCT Prague.

(3)       UCT Prague shall release details of the school fees for the next academic year not later than 2 months before the final date for submitting applications.

(4)       Fees will not be refunded in the case of termination of studies due to:

a) Failure to fulfil requirements of the degree program in accordance with the Study and Examination Regulations

b) Suspension from studies in accordance with Art 65. Par. 1 letter c) or Art. 67 of the Universities Act.

(5)       Fees shall be partly refunded in the case of termination of studies due to:

a)       Leaving the degree program

b)       Withdrawal of degree program accreditation

c)       Termination of student program accreditation

In cases a) to c), UCT Prague shall refund the proportion of fees remaining after deducting expenses already incurred.

(6)       Fees are due within 15 calendar days of enrolment. The date that the amount is credited to the account of UCT Prague is deemed to be the date of payment.

(7)       The Rector, or an authorised Vice-Rector for Foreign Affairs, may permit payment of fees in instalments, subject to a written request by the foreign student.

Article 6

(1)       Foreign students shall fulfil the agreement stated in Art. 4 Par. 3. Failure to fulfil the obligations pursuant to this agreement is construed as a disciplinary offence.

(2)       Foreign students who complete their studies shall be awarded University Diploma and State Final Examination certificates in Czech, together with their legally certified English equivalents.

(3)       Upon a foreign student’s written request, UCT Prague shall arrange for his/her accommodation at the students’ hostel. Foreign students shall be accommodated at their own expense and shall respect the rules of the student’s hostel, as well as the instructions of its management; failure to do so may result in suspension from the student’s hostel. In such a case, UCT Prague is not obliged to secure alternative accommodation.

(4)       Upon request, the faculty providing the respective degree program shall issue a certificate of study to a foreign student, stating the form of study and the fact that the student is a foreign student.

Final Provisions

(1)       The Conditions and Proceedings for the Admission of Foreign Students to Study Foreign-Language Degree Programs at the Institute of Chemical Technology, Prague, registered by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports on March 23, 1999 under Ref No. 17 870/99-30, are hereby rendered invalid.

(2)       This internal regulation was approved by the Academic Senate of UCT Prague on October 11, 2005, in accordance with Art. 9 Par. 1 letter b) of the Universities Act

(3)       This internal regulation shall come into effect in accordance with Art. 36 Par. 4 of the Universities Act on the date of its registration by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports.

UCT Prague may add to a bachelor's diploma in some fields designation recognized by the European quality bachelor's degree "EuroBachelor". The advantage for the student with this title is the possibility of admission to the Master's degree at any European partner university that is accredited by the awarding of the mark, but also the undisputed quality of their course.

 

Information about the program

Program of language training and to study programs accredited by UCT Prague (the preparatory program) is designed for foreign students who are, after its successful completion, preparing for a proper study at one of the faculties at UCT Prague:

 

  • Faculty of Chemical Technology
  • Faculty of Environmental Technology
  • Faculty of Food and Biochemical Technology
  • Faculty of Chemical Engineering

 

Year preparatory program runs in two semesters. The winter semester begins in September and ends in mid-February. Summer semester begins in the first half of February and lasts until the end of June. During the program is primarily taught Czech language and vocational subjects in Czech.

 

Six-month preparatory program in the summer semester is intended only to candidates with knowledge of the Czech language on the B1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference. The duration of the summer semester is from February to June of that year, when the Czech language training is supplemented by studying of the vocational subjects.

 

Czech language training

The main objective of teaching the Czech language with a total of 440 academic hours (88 hours in a six-month program) is its practical mastery. Teaching is therefore focused on the active use of language skills. After the completion of our courses, student is able to master difficult communication situations and is also fully ready to study vocational subjects of bachelor or master degree programs.

Language training takes place at the Institute of Foreign Languages, the language school with the right of execution state exams Ltd. (The ICJ) in Prague 1, Štěpánská 644/35, Prague 1.

 

Teaching vocational subjects

Teaching vocational subjects in the summer semester in the number of 180 academic hours. Taught subjects are basics of mathematics, basics of chemistry and physics fundamentals.

Teaching takes place in the classroom UCT Prague under the guidance of professors from experts, UCT Prague.

 

The aim of the vocational subjects teaching is:

  • Expanding knowledge of the Czech language technical terminology.
  • Facilitating validation tests that are part of the admission procedures of foreign education in the Czech Republic. (One of the conditions for enrollment in full-time study at accredited degree programs at UCT Prague is a successful validation of educational attainment participant from abroad, at the middle or high school.)
  • Facilitating the beginning of the study in an accredited educational program at UCT Prague. Newly acquired knowledge by studying technical subjects, students will use during the first year of study in a Bachelor or Master's program.
  • · Acquisition of Master's way of student life and study habits that are necessary for the successful completion of bachelor's, master's and doctoral programs at universities in the Czech Republic.

 


Conditions for admission

The condition for admission to the preparatory program is completed secondary education, which was subsequently granted by the Ministry of Education of the Czech Republic as part of validation.

Another criterion for admission to the preparatory program is the result from vocational subjects studying (mathematics and chemistry) in diameter trademark evaluation, including 3.0 (applies to the evaluation system 1 to 5, where 1 is the best), or equivalent diameter for other assessment systems.

 

Documentation, visas

The first step to participate in the program is sending the completed electronic application to study in the preparatory program (ICJ published on the web or UCT Prague here, the English version is here and Russian version is here) to address ICJ (info@icj.cz). All communication regarding the registration in the preparatory program is in charge of the ICJ.

 

Based on fulfilled conditions for admission to the preparatory program there will be contracts concluded with a contender about their participation in the preliminary program. The contract will contain the content of the program, rates and fees for the registration to participate in the program. The contract is signed in the Czech language and is listed here. Each participant of the preparatory course will receive the original documents from the ICJ, on which he is entitled at the place of residence to apply for settlement of long-term visa for the purpose of "studying" in the Czech Republic. Status "student" then simplifies the procedures associated with the extension of his stay in the Czech Republic and provides many other benefits.

Accommodation in Prague

For participants in the preparatory program UCT Prague provides accommodation and catering at the student college Volha (http://www.vscht-suz.cz/ubytovani/o-studentskych-kolejich). These services are not included in the program.

 

Successful completion of the program

On the basis of a successful completion of the program and regular attendance is issued the UCT Prague Certificate of completion of the preparatory program.

 

Curator

With the admission to the preparatory program is every student assigned to curator ICJ, who helps candidates and assist in addressing issues related to adaptation in the new environment.

 

ICJ provides:

  • Cooperation in validation, which is the recognition of achieved level of foreign education by authorities of the Czech Republic.
  • Health insurance for clients, which is one of the conditions for getting visa to the Czech Republic (this service is not included in the program).
  • Consultation on choosing a suitable accredited bachelor's or master's degree program and field for study at UCT Prague.
  • Assistance in filing applications for university.
  • Transfer from the airport or train station (this service is not included in the program).
  • Synergies in addressing issues related to visa issues and communication with government authorities of the Czech Republic.
