A Legacy of Scientific Excellence
UCT Prague was established in 1952, but its roots reach back to 1807, when the first chemistry course was taught at the Prague Polytechnic. Following a reorganization in 1920, the chemistry department became the School of Chemical Technology—one of seven faculties of the Czech Technical University.
Throughout its history, UCT Prague has been associated with a number of prominent figures in the field of chemistry. Among the most distinguished are
- Nobel Prize laureate Vladimir Prelog,
- Otto Wichterle, the inventor of contact lenses,
- Emil Votoček, who developed the Czech system of chemical nomenclature.
Several presidents of the Czech Academy of Sciences, František Šorm, Rudolf Zahradník, and Jiří Drahoš, also have strong ties to the university.
