Science, Snow, and Social Bridges: A Journey from Ethiopia to UCT Prague

My journey to UCT Prague began with a clear mission: to join the IMATEC program. I was drawn to its ambitious scope in promoting environmental sustainability and the opportunity to study at a consortium of prestigious, historical institutions, including UCT Prague, the University of Oviedo, and the Åbo Akademi University. Arriving from Ethiopia in September, I felt I was stepping into a new world of both scientific challenge and cultural discovery.

One of the most defining parts of my experience has been the unwavering support from the university. This began long before I arrived; during the application process, the Department of International Relations Officers were incredibly supportive, guiding me through every step. Once on campus, their dedication continued, making a complex international move feel manageable. This was further enhanced by the Erasmus Student Network (ESN UCT Prague). Their collaboration with the university provided a warm welcome, helping us navigate everything from administrative paperwork to social integration.

One of my first "shocks" was the sheer efficiency of the city. Back home, I looked at the map and worried that the commute from the dormitory to the university would be long and exhausting. However, thanks to Prague’s incredible transportation network, the distance felt like nothing.

I quickly became fascinated by the "Prague etiquette." I noticed how everyone instinctively stands on the right of the escalator to let those in a hurry pass on the left, and how pedestrians strictly keep to the right on the sidewalk. These small details reflect the organized and respectful atmosphere of the city.

Then, there is the Czech beer culture. Seeing how central 'pivo' is to life in Prague was fascinating. It isn’t just a drink; it’s a social bridge. Whether in a historic pub or a student gathering, it serves as the ultimate catalyst for great conversations and relaxation after a long day study.

While my studies officially began in the warmth of September, a major cultural milestone arrived in the late November: I saw snow for the first time. Watching the city transform into a white landscape was a magical experience that I will never forget. It added a layer of wonder to a semester that was already intellectually stimulating.

Beyond the lectures, the most profound part of this semester has been the people. Sharing this time together with classmates and students from all parts of the world has been one of the best experiences I have ever had. We are a global family, learning from each other's diverse backgrounds while working toward a greener future.

The Next Mission!  As I finish this amazing first semester, I feel a deep sense of gratitude. Prague has been a perfect host. Now, I am ready for my "next mission" at the University of Oviedo in Spain, carrying the lessons, the friendships, and the spirit of UCT Prague with me.
