Compulsory Practice
Compulsory practice is a mandatory part of some Master's degree programmes. Whether your program requires it can be found in your study plan. If it is compulsory, you will usually complete it during the first year of your master’s studies. Compulsory practice can be carried out either in a partner organization of the university or in a company you arrange individually (subject to approval by your institute).
The general conditions for internships are described in the directive on the intranet.
Detailed rules, options, and procedures for compulsory practice are set by the institute where you plan to complete your compulsory practice. To learn how internships work at your chosen institute, you can contact the internship administrator—either by email or at an information meeting (sometimes as part of the Laboratory Project course, or afterwards). There you will find out whom to contact, what the internship conditions are (scope, tasks, etc.), and any other requirements.
You are responsible for arranging your internship individually. It is recommended to look for one in your field of study; however, if you are interested in something outside your specialization, you can discuss it with the internship administrator (in advance!).
Internship approval: Before starting, your internship must be approved by the administrator and a conctract must be in place.
After completing your internship, you must submit a report about your experience. Some departments may also invite you to a short interview to discuss what you learned (usually an informal conversation).
You will receive Course Credit once you have completed the internship, submitted your final report, and taken part in the required excursions (typically one week).
- You can find an interesting company yourself or take advantage of offers from the institute or faculty.
- You may also complete the internship abroad, for example through IAESTE or the Erasmus+ program. In such cases, it is especially important to begin all the necessary formalities well ahead of time.
- If you are already employed in your field, you may request recognition of that work as fulfilling the internship requirement—check with your administrator.
Your internship is usually unpaid, but you may negotiate compensation individually with your internship provider organization.
The internship must be at least 120 hours, which can be completed:
- in a block format (e.g., three weeks of 40 hours each),
- regulary during the semester (e.g., a few hours per week).
Tip! Both students and companies agree that spreading the internship across the semester gives you more space and time for someone to devote to you and provides you with quality guidance and a good insight into the business.
