Master programmes in English

These Master's study programmes are primarily designed for applicants from abroad. Students are required to pay a tuition fee. All courses are conducted in English. All study programmes are accredited by the Czech Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports and are in accordance with Bologna Process - European Higher Education Area requirements.

Besides the four UCT Prague study programmes listed below, we also offer joint degree master programmes with our partner universities in other EU countries and master programme offered by UCT School of Business.

Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Engineering

Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Engineering

Master Programme, Faculty of Chemical Technology

The “Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Engineering” study programme reflects the strong demand for hydrogen technology specialists on the European labour market. This programme is a Master programme culminating with the Czech title Ing. (equivalent to an MSc.). Applicants should hold a Bachelor degree in Chemical Technology, Chemical Engineering, or an equivalent degree. The programme is taught in English (minimum B2 level competency).

Core theoretical subjects are complemented with hands-on laboratory experiments with project-oriented instruction, equipping graduates with practical problem-solving skills they can use throughout their future careers. Students receive instruction in the basic and specialized technologies associated with the use of hydrogen in the energy, transport, and chemical commercial sectors. Project-based tasks and presentations further prepare graduates for the workplace. Students can specialize in hydrogen production, hydrogen utilization, or the mathematical modelling of processes/entire systems.

Careers

Graduates are well-qualified to be leaders in using hydrogen for energy storage, hydrogen mobility, in the chemical industry, or in any hydrogen-related processes with their comprehensive knowledge of processes in hydrogen technologies and energy conversion, including operational aspects of these processes. Graduates are able to engage creatively in the development, design, optimization, and individual control for both equipment and technological units, being prepared to solve practical problems in the field of hydrogen technologies as well as other technical fields. Graduates are also trained for management functions in manufacturing and commercial chemical companies and for activities in organizations focused on research, design, and assessment of processes in the field of hydrogen technologies, energy, and chemical technologies and are competitive candidates for future doctoral studies in Chemistry, Materials Science, and related fields.

Chemistry (Organic Chemistry)

Chemistry (Organic Chemistry)

Master Programme, Faculty of Chemical Technology

The programme is designed for students who are interested in studying basic chemical disciplines. The study of the specialization Organic Chemistry provides students with a comprehensive education in the field with an emphasis on mastering the methods of synthesis of organic compounds; understanding the mechanisms of organic reactions; and with an overlap into physical, analytical and organometallic chemistry and catalysis. An important part of the programme is experimental work in the laboratory, through which students acquire practical skills and the ability to pursue independent scientific work. This programme is also intended for students studying in the Double Degree programmes according to individual bilateral agreements between the UCT Prague and a university abroad, where students usually complete one year at their home universities and one year at universities abroad.

Careers

Graduates are well prepared for qualified positions in research institutions, analytical laboratories and in the chemical industry. They can also teach chemistry in schools or work in government or for commercial companies. Of course, an added value of this English programme is the fact that graduates are well prepared to go abroad and find employment in highly competitive and dynamic European and worldwide market environments. It goes without saying that graduates of this English programme are also optimally prepared for Ph.D. studies and subsequent academic careers in Chemistry and related fields anywhere in Europe or the rest of the English-speaking world.

Chemistry, Technology and Materials

Chemistry, Technology and Materials

Master Programme, Faculty of Chemical Technology

The study programme “Chemistry, Technology, and Materials” consists of two specializations, “Chemistry and Chemical Technology” and “Materials Chemistry and Technology”. This programme is designed as a follow-up Master programme (culminating with a Master degree and the Czech title Ing., the equivalent of an MSc.). The programmes builds upon prior education of graduates with bachelor degrees (Bc.) from the UCT Prague “Chemistry and Technology” bachelor programme or an equivalent bachelor programme at a university or comparable institution abroad. The programme is taught in English (requiring, at a minimum, B2 level English language skills) and is designed for students that cannot or do not wish to enrol in a Czech language programme.

Careers

Students from the programme graduate with one of two specializations, “Chemistry and Chemical Technology” or “Materials Chemistry and Technology”, and are well qualified for positions in the chemical industry and all materials-oriented sectors. The Czech title Ing. (equivalent to an MSc.) is the most acknowledged title for highly-qualified professionals in production plants, especially technologists and production managers, as well as for applied research and development (R&D) and supervisory quality control (QC) positions. Due to the solid and sufficiently general foundation in chemistry, technology, and materials, graduates of this programme are well prepared for choosing careers that are close to, but not necessarily identical with, their specializations. Of course, an added bonus of this English programme is the fact that graduates are well prepared to enter highly competitive and dynamic European and worldwide job markets. It goes without saying that graduates of this English programme are also optimally prepared for Ph.D. studies and subsequent academic careers in Chemistry, Materials Science, and related fields anywhere in Europe or in other English-speaking countries.

Specialisation - Chemistry and Chemical Technology

In addition to this common programme foundation, with a Chemistry and Chemical Technology specialization, students focus on organic synthesis, retrosynthesis, process design, molecular spectroscopy, and several more specialized topics (catalysis, transition metals in organic synthesis, and so on). Students can also select a Master Double Degree in Applied Chemistry according to a bilateral agreement between the UCT Prague, Czech Republic, and the University of Burgundy in Dijon, France. This double degree requires one year abroad and one year at the home university.

Specialisation - Materials Chemistry and Technology

With the “Materials Chemistry and Technology” specialization, students graduate with a thorough foundation in chemistry and physics of solids, microstructure-property relations, crystal chemistry, spectroscopic and microscopic characterization of materials, and mechanics of materials, and can simultaneously focus more specifically on a material class of their choice (metals, polymers, glass, or ceramics).

Sustainability and Environmental Engineering

Sustainability and Environmental Engineering

The programme prepares experts with expert knowledge of environmental chemistry, microbiology, hydrobiology, water and atmosphere technologies, decontamination technologies, and waste handling technologies. The interdisciplinary character of this programme prepares graduates for careers in all areas related to environmental protection and engineering. The programme provides students with a comprehensive knowledge of environmental protection and engineering, including air, water, and soil protection. The programme emphasizes expert education about waste production from both industrial and municipal sources and concentrates on the prevention and minimization of waste production, on waste utilization and reprocessing, waste removal, and assessment of environmental impacts. An important part of the programme is devoted to water technologies and air protection technologies. The programme also includes education about industrial toxicology, ecotoxicology, environmental analysis, decontamination technologies, and environmentally-oriented legislation.

Careers

Graduates are prepared for careers in process engineering, research and development, design, and production control. They can also serve as experts to administrative and supervisory bodies, rescue services, and waste handling and reprocessing plants. They can also work as secondary school teachers. Graduates of this programme are highly flexible and gain the skills necessary to adapt easily to changes in the job market.

Biotechnology and Food Science

Biotechnology and Food Science

The programme prepares graduates to become experts with high-level knowledge in biotechnologies and bioingeneering and food science, with an emphasis on food quality and safety. The broadly designed structure of this programme—together with intentional connection between chemical, biological, and engineering education—opens a wide range of career options to graduates. The programme extends and deepens general knowledge gained at the Bachelor level in biochemistry, organic and physical chemistry, biology, microbiology, food technology and analysis, and in the fundamentals in biotechnology and bioengineering. Students may hone their expertise by properly choosing elective courses.

Careers

Graduates are prepared for highly qualified positions in biotechnological companies, in food production plants, in companies oriented to agricultural commodities, and in health care or pharmaceutical companies. They are qualified to hold positions in (bio-)process design and control and quality management in research and development departments. Due to the versatility of their education, graduates are prepared to adapt easily to changing conditions and new tasks. Graduates are also prepared for positions in administration and supervisory agencies and doctoral studies.

Chemical Engineering and Bioengineering

Chemical engineering concerns itself with the transformation and processing of raw materials into useful products that we encounter in our everyday lives (e.g., packaging, plastics, food, medicine). As a chemical engineer, you will learn to understand, describe, and model various processes to design, manage, and optimize the necessary production equipment for efficient, economical, safe, and environmentally friendly process operation. You can participate in developing new materials or unique technologies based on tailored functional properties of micro- and nanostructures. An integral part of the programme involves laboratory work, during which you will conduct specific research projects.
